The largest ship of the Iranian navy caught fire and then sank in the Gulf of Oman under mysterious circumstances, semi-official news agencies reported. The Fars and Tasnim news agencies said efforts failed to rescue the support ship Kharg, named after the island that serves as Iran’s main oil terminal. Fars news agency said the fire started around 2:25 a.m. and firefighters tried to contain it. The ship sank near the Iranian port of Jask, about 1,270 kilometers (790 miles) southeast of Tehran on the Gulf of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz – the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf. Images circulated on Iranian social media of sailors in life jackets evacuating the ship as a fire blazed behind them. State television and semi-official news agencies referred to Kharg as a “training ship”. Fars Agency published a video of thick black smoke rising from the ship in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Satellite images of Planet Labs Inc. Analyzed by the Associated Press, an exit exited just west of Jask on Tuesday. US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellites that track fires from space have detected a fire at the Jask site that started before the time of the fire reported by Fars.
It operates out as one of the few ships in the Iranian Navy capable of providing at sea supplies to its other ships. It can also lift heavy loads and serve as a launching pad for helicopters. The ship, built in Britain and launched in 1977, entered the Iranian Navy in 1984 after protracted negotiations following the 1979 Iranian Islamic Revolution.
Iranian officials did not provide any reason for the fire on board the Kharg. But it comes after a series of mysterious bombings that began in 2019 targeting ships in the Gulf of Oman. The US Navy later accused Iran of targeting the ships with coil mines, a timed explosive that divers usually attach to the ship’s hull.
Iran has denied targeting the ships, although US Navy footage showed members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard removing an unexploded mine from the ship. The incidents came amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran after then-US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew America from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers.
The Kharg sinking represents Iran’s latest naval disaster. In 2020, during an Iranian military exercise, a missile accidentally hit a naval vessel near the port of Jask, killing 19 sailors and injuring 15 others. Also in 2018, an Iranian Navy destroyer sank in the Caspian Sea.
