الفاو.. من أجل الحصول على طعام صحي، نحتاج إلى بيئة صحية

دعا المدير العام لمنظمة الأغذية والزراعة أغنى دول العالم اول امس إلى زيادة الاستثمار في الحياة المستدامة لإطعام سكان العالم الذين يتزايد عددهم.
ففي مناشدته لوزراء البيئة في مجموعة العشرين، سلط شو دونيو، المدير العام للفاو، الضوء على التحدي المتمثل في الاضطرار إلى إنتاج المزيد من الغذاء مع تقليل انبعاثات غازات الاحتباس الحراري. وقال:
“اليوم، تواجه البشرية أزمة كوكبية ثلاثية تتمثل في فقدان التنوع البيولوجي وأزمة مناخية وتأثير الجائحة. من أجل الحصول على طعام صحي، نحتاج إلى بيئة صحية”.
مياه أفضل
وتحدث المدير العام للفاو عن الحاجة إلى معالجة ندرة المياه، التي تؤثر على أكثر من مليار شخص، من خلال زيادة الكفاءة والإدارة المستدامة.
كما تضرر ما يقرب من مليار هكتار من الأراضي الزراعية البعلية والمراعي بشدة من الجفاف المتكرر.
وأشار السيد شو إلى إمكانية معالجة التحديات المتعلقة بالمياه من خلال الابتكار الرقمي والرقابة الأفضل والاستثمار.
كما دعا إلى تكثيف النهج الصديقة للتنوع البيولوجي، بما في ذلك المزيد من الاستثمارات في الإجراءات ذات الصلة وإبطاء فقدان التنوع البيولوجي. وأضاف قائلا: “إن المستويات الحالية للاستثمار غير كافية إلى حد كبير”.
فائدة بقيمة 1.4 تريليون دولار
وشدد المسؤول الأممي على أن عكس مسار إزالة الأحراج “سيساعد في التخفيف من تغير المناخ” ويمنع تفشي الأمراض التي تنتقل من الحيوانات إلى البشر، مضيفا أن الفوائد الاقتصادية لوقف فقدان التنوع البيولوجي وتدهور الأراضي، يمكن أن تصل إلى 1.4 تريليون دولار سنويا.
وقال إن عقد الأمم المتحدة الذي تم إطلاقه مؤخرا بشأن استعادة النظام الإيكولوجي، والذي تقوده منظمة الأغذية والزراعة وبرنامج الأمم المتحدة للبيئة (UNEP)، يوفر “فرصة ممتازة لحشد جهودنا الجماعية”.
وتدعو منظمة الفاو إلى اتخاذ إجراءات عاجلة لعكس المعدل المقلق لفقدان التنوع البيولوجي، وتوصي بتوسيع نهج التخفيف والإجراءات عبر قطاعي الأغذية والزراعة.
وأكد السيد شو أن عمل وكالة الأمم المتحدة كان يسترشد بالحاجة إلى جعل أنظمة الأغذية الزراعية أكثر كفاءة ومرونة وشمولية واستدامة – كل ذلك بهدف تحقيق تحسين الإنتاج، والتغذية، والبيئة والحياة، وبدون ترك أحد .
التحدي التكنولوجي الشديد
أعلن منتدى الغذاء العالمي (WFF) – الذي أنشأته وتقوده لجنة الشباب التابعة للأغذية والزراعة (الفاو) – يوم الخميس عن إطلاق مسابقة دولية بالشراكة مع Extreme Tech Challenge (XTC) غير الربحية لدعم رواد الأعمال وعرض الأعمال التي تسخر التكنولوجيا لدفع التحول المستدام لنظم الأغذية الزراعية، للقضاء على الجوع في العالم.
وسيتم تقديم جوائز WFF Startup Innovation في 2 تشرين الأول/أكتوبر للمتسابقين الناجحين الذين قاموا ببناء شركات تتماشى مع تحسين الإنتاج، والتغذية، والبيئة والحياة.
وقالت بيث بيشدول، نائبة المدير العام للفاو: “إن فئة منافسة التكنولوجيا الزراعية، فئة مسابقة الغذاء والماء تتناول بشكل مباشر مهمة منظمة الأغذية والزراعة للقضاء على الجوع في جميع أنحاء العالم وتحقيق الأمن الغذائي عالي الجودة للجميع”.
تركيز النظم الغذائية
في غضون ذلك، يعقد لقاء يسبق قمة الأمم المتحدة بشأن النظم الغذائية لعام 2021 من يوم الاثنين إلى يوم الأربعاء الأسبوع المقبل.

The Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the world’s richest countries called yesterday for increased investment in sustainable living to feed a growing world population.
In his appeal to G20 environment ministers, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu highlighted the challenge of having to produce more food while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. And he said:
“Today, humanity is facing a triple planetary crisis of biodiversity loss, a climate crisis and the impact of the pandemic. In order to have healthy food, we need a healthy environment.”

The FAO Director-General spoke of the need to tackle water scarcity, which affects more than one billion people, through increased efficiency and sustainable management.
Nearly one billion hectares of rain-fed agricultural land and pastures have also been severely affected by recurrent droughts.
Mr. Shaw noted that water-related challenges can be addressed through digital innovation, better monitoring and investment.
It also called for intensifying biodiversity-friendly approaches, including more investments in related actions and slowing biodiversity loss. “The current levels of investment are largely insufficient,” he added.
$1.4 trillion in interest
The UN official stressed that reversing deforestation would “help mitigate climate change” and prevent outbreaks of diseases transmitted from animals to humans, adding that the economic benefits of halting biodiversity loss and land degradation could reach $1.4 trillion annually.
He said the recently launched United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, led by the Food and Agriculture Organization and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), provides an “excellent opportunity to mobilize our collective efforts”.
FAO is calling for urgent action to reverse the alarming rate of biodiversity loss, and recommends expanding mitigation approaches and actions across the food and agricultural sectors.
Mr. Shaw emphasized that the work of the UN agency has been guided by the need to make agri-food systems more efficient, resilient, inclusive and sustainable – all with the aim of achieving better production, nutrition, environment and life, leaving no one behind.
Severe technological challenge
The World Food Forum (WFF) – created and led by the Youth Committee on Food and Agriculture (FAO) – announced on Thursday the launch of an international competition in partnership with the non-profit Extreme Tech Challenge (XTC) to support entrepreneurs and showcase businesses that harness technology to drive the sustainable transformation of agri-food systems. , to end world hunger.
The WFF Startup Innovation Awards will be presented on October 2 to successful contestants who have built companies aligned with improving production, nutrition, the environment and life.
“The Agricultural Technology Competition category, the Food and Water Competition category, directly addresses FAO’s mission to end hunger worldwide and achieve high-quality food security for all,” said Beth Bichdoll, Deputy Director-General of FAO.
